Surnommé « Crossroads of the world1 », Times Square est l'un des endroits les plus célèbres et les plus animés au monde, à l'instar de Shibuya à Tokyo ou Piccadilly Circus à Londres : environ 365 000 personnes y passent chaque jour.
Les théâtres de Broadway et le nombre important de néons publicitaires ou autres écrans géants en ont fait une des icônes de New York, et un symbole de l'urbanisme de Manhattan.
